What is the difference between an American Plan Lodge and an Outpost?
- American Plan Lodge: Fully staffed and all-inclusive, offering chef-prepared meals, daily maid service, and a guided or unguided boat featuring a 4-stroke 25hp Yamaha electric-start outboard, comfortable backrest seats, a sonar fish locator, and a landing net. Premium St. Croix rods with Daiwa BG spinning reels, and a tackle box stocked with over 30 expertly chosen lures for Northern Pike and Walleye.
- Outpost Camp: A more rugged, DIY experience. You get an exclusive cabin and boat featuring a 4-stroke 15hp Yamaha outboard, comfortable backrest seats, and a landing net. Premium St. Croix rods with Daiwa BG spinning reels, and a tackle box stocked with over 30 expertly chosen lures for Northern Pike and Walleye. You will bring and cook your own food and manage your own daily schedule.
What is a fly-in fishing trip?
A trip to a remote wilderness lodge or outpost accessible only by floatplane because there are no roads or public boat launches. This ensures extremely low fishing pressure and pristine ecosystems.
Since you are a fly-in fishing lodge, is my first day of fishing spent getting to the Lodge/Outpost?
As a fly-in fishing lodge, one of our top priorities is to get you into the lodge or outpost by 8 am. This gives you a full day of fishing, with shore lunch on day one. Unlike other fly-in fishing lodges that have you arrive late morning/early afternoon, we feel you paid for a full day of fishing, not a half or quarter day.
Where do flights depart from?
Cobham River flights depart from a seaplane base in Lac du Bonnet (about a 70-minute drive from Winnipeg) using planes like Otters or Caravans.
Is airfare to the remote lodge included in the package price?
Yes. The chartered floatplane flight from Lac du Bonnet to Cobham River is included in the base package.
What is the luggage weight limit on the floatplanes?
Lodges strictly adhere to weight regulations set by the Canada Transport Committee for safety. The strict weight limit is 55 lbs. per person, including your bags, fishing gear, food, and liquid refreshments. If you exceed the limit and need an additional aircraft, lodges will charge an extra fee of 3.00 per lb. to fly your extra gear.
What happens if weather delays the floatplane?
Floatplanes operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). If fog, high winds, or storms roll in, flights may be delayed for safety.
How do deposits work for fly-in packages?
Because floatplane charters must be secured in advance, Cobham River requires a 900.00 deposit (lodge) and 700.00 deposit (outpost), with the remaining balance due on April 1.
What time can I expect to arrive back at the air base on departure day?
Since our flights arrive at the lodge or outpost by 8 a.m., the return flight arrives back at the air base before 10 a.m., weather permitting. That means you will be back in Winnipeg in time to catch the late afternoon flight home, or still have plenty of daylight for that drive home.
What is your cancellation policy?
Before November 1st
If you cancel before November 1st of the year before your trip, we will refund all funds paid, less the trip deposit. The retained deposit may be applied to another trip in the same or following calendar year.
After November 1st
If you cancel on or after November 1st of the year before your trip, your deposit will be forfeited, and the balance received can be used on another trip in the same or following calendar year.
NOTE: Reservations can be transferred or sold to new guest(s) not currently booked with Cobham River Lodge.
What is your rebooking policy?
Most of our guests make it a tradition to return year after year, sharing their piece of paradise with friends and family, hoping to pass it down to the next generation. With very few dates available each year, our rebooking policy gives guests a short window to secure their dates before they are available for other inquiries.
What are the main lodge accommodations like in the remote bush?
The main lodge features modern accommodations for 1 to 16 guests. Accommodations in the main lodge include a dining room, an indoor and outdoor living area, and six guest rooms with comfortable beds and electricity. The lodge provides modern comforts, including daily housekeeping, clean towels, and fresh ice. Guests can also relax on a screened-in deck with scenic views of the river and the wilderness.
What do I need to bring to an Outpost Camp?
Guests need to bring their own personal gear and food. (Guests can often pre-order groceries to be waiting at the air base).
Is there cell service or Wi-Fi?
Cell service is non-existent in the deep bush. However, Cobham River provides free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi so guests can use Wi-Fi calling, Skype, or FaceTime.
What wildlife might I see?
Common sightings include moose, black bears, bald eagles, beavers, mink, river otters, and occasionally lynx or woodland caribou.
Is there a laundry facility to have clothes washed?
Yes, you can have your laundry washed. If you wish to have clothes washed, there is a $10 per load cash fee paid to the housekeeper. This service is only available at the lodge and NOT available at the outpost.
Staff Gratuities
Gratuities are an expression of your gratitude for service that is over and above your expectations. Tips are an entirely personal matter. Most of our guests do tip, typically an amount equivalent to what one would tip at a restaurant (10% of the package value). Our staff greatly appreciates any level of tipping.
Outpost and pilot gratuities are not expected and are entirely up to you if you choose to provide them.
What fish species will I catch?
Primary targets are Walleye and trophy Northern Pike. Secondary species may include Yellow Perch, Burbot, and Whitefish.
When is the best time to book a fly-in trip?
- The general season runs from late May through mid-September.
- Walleye: The bite starts late May and runs strong through August.
- Northern Pike: Big pike are usually caught from late May through June and mid-August through September. June is known for the biggest fish, July offers variety, and September kicks off the aggressive fall feed.
Do I need to hire a fishing guide?
No. A few guests navigate easily on their own using provided GPS sonars and detailed contour maps. Guided trips are available for a carefree, educational experience.
Can I fish in the evenings after dinner?
Yes. Unlike “fly-out” lodges with strict 9 AM–4 PM schedules, Cobham River is located right on the water, allowing you to fish during the “golden hour” at twilight without extra fees.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. All anglers must possess a valid Manitoba Fishing License before hitting the water.
Are barbless hooks required?
Yes. Manitoba law strictly requires barbless hooks to protect the fishery. You can pinch down the barbs on standard hooks.
Can I keep the fish I catch?
You can keep up to four Walleye under 20 inches. All Walleye over 20 inches and all Northern Pike must be released.
Can I bring live bait into Canada?
No. You cannot bring live or dead bait across the border into Canada. Lodge guests are provided frozen/salted minnows (outpost guests can preorder or purchase in Winnipeg).
